I did it! I found Tinder again.

For what? I wasn't looking for a partner, but examples of cool biographies. I have set myself the goal that they should reflect the tips I wrote about in the text on how to write a description of yourself for a dating profile.

It turned out that it's not that easy to find a description of yourself that actually says something about the account owner, his / her sense of humor, values, passions, etc.

Self-description under a magnifying glass, what is going on on my Tinder
Before discussing the proposed examples of self-description, which can be taken as inspiration to create your own, I will share the results of a mini survey.

It is difficult to talk about meeting any methodological requirements, it is not a scientific study. I just wanted to visualize in numbers what I noticed on Tinder.

The profiles I analyzed appeared randomly, I did not use any search criteria (e.g. age or distance). In total, I clicked through 400 profiles (200 for each gender).

Just over half of the users (203 people) completed their profile in full, i.e. they did not leave their biography empty.

However, there is one "but".

This group included users whose description consisted only of: Instagram username, emoji or information about how tall someone is. If only the profiles in which the self-description was more extensive were left in this mini-analysis, it turns out that there are not that many of them, i.e. about 35%.

Interestingly, men wrote about themselves slightly more often than women, but these differences were not statistically significant.

Who completes the self-description and why - research results
I compared the obtained results with other, this time scientific analyzes. The study I will mention in a moment is not the latest, because it comes from 2016. The date of publication may be important in the context of the timeliness of the results. The last 5 years for the dating sites market have been their very rapid development.

Nevertheless, its authors state that 36% of the respondents left the part devoted to their own biography empty. There was also a repeated tendency that women (42%) gave up describing themselves more often than men (30%).

As it turns out, ladies do not lose the interest of men because of this, they still receive many likes and matches.

I found an explanation for this phenomenon in the extensive Bussines of Apps report (Tinder Revenue and Usage Statistics, 2021). There is a graph posted there showing what users value when they check someone's dating profile. In short: for men, photos count the most, and for ladies - description of yourself.

As a result, women do not have to supplement their bio, because men rely on what they see on their profile.

In turn, gentlemen, in order to interest the users, they have to work harder on the text layer, not only on the visual layer of their profile. As it turns out, it pays off!

Benefits of Writing About Yourself in Bio
The aforementioned study showed

that having a supplemented bio can increase the number of received matches 4 times.

How did the researchers come to this? 3 fictitious dating profiles were created and the number of matches they generated when the account did not contain a self-description and later, when the profile was supplemented with this part was compared.

Interestingly, the increase in the number of matches after filling the bio was also noted in women, but it was not as significant as in men.

Working on creating a dating profile can therefore pay off for both genders, but in achieving different goals. Gentlemen, when preparing a description of themselves, can gain in the eyes of the candidates. By supplementing the bio, men can confirm or enhance their attractiveness, especially when the attached photos are not very interesting and would potentially not get liked.

On the other hand, women can treat the self-description as an instrument for selecting candidates. In the previous text I wrote about the fact that by presenting ourselves in a certain way, we attract people similar to us. It's worth getting to know yourself a little deeper than just writing a decimal point about your personality traits or what you like. Another thing is that if the gentlemen pay the most attention to the attached photos, in the excitement of browsing the profiles, they may completely overlook our (i.e. women) description. Only who would like to meet someone who judges other users only superficially. I assume that someone who is focused on establishing a long-term relationship will want to get to know us, so they will read these few sentences.

12 examples of self-description
After a fairly extensive (but important) introduction, I can go on to discuss examples of self-description on the dating profile, which in my opinion fulfill their role well - they give the opportunity to meet the account owner or interest him / her.

I rejected self-descriptions that included: quotes and sentences, negativisms, terms, Instagram account names, prompts to ask questions instead of writing about yourself in a bio, a list of character traits or interests.

For each of the examples.

This is a much better version for "I like to cook". The proportion between seriousness, nostalgia, showing one's own values, but also a sense of humor is preserved here.

“In fact, it does not part with headphones - always some podcast or music (if you have something on the loop, give it the title). In my spare time I read feminist books, watch cartoons and catch up on filming [...]
This part of self-description was mostly about interests, but importantly, they were given imaginable content. Instead of talking about the importance of music, the woman portrayed it. In addition, she signals that this is what she would like to talk about. With her message, she should attract people similar to her.

"I am far from being artificial, a ruling party, a sedentary lifestyle and being a carnivore (I do not impose my views and I do not look at people's plates, but if you understand veganism not as a diet, but as a rejection of violence - mhmmmm, let's mix it together in a pot)."
Describing yourself by pointing out who you are not instead of who you are can be a risky solution. Such a bio may be negatively perceived, because indirectly a person may feel criticized and excluded, despite the declaration of the author of the description about their tolerance. However, the last part of the biography is cool, in which the woman communicates her values and talks to people like her in a flirty manner.

“I am looking for someone who will eat the flat halves of the rolls for me, because I do not eat them and why waste them. [...] "
It's intriguing and fun to make you want to ask what's wrong with these flat-top buns. Showing a sense of humor, even slightly deprecating yourself, revealing even your guilty pleasure can be an interesting solution.

Offers for men
Choosing examples of self-description in men was a bit more difficult. Most of them did not say much about the owner himself ("I'm a nice, honest, humorous and distant guy"), the relationship he is looking for ("I'm looking for someone who will be X, Y, Z.") or contained conditions or negatives ( eg "If X, then shift left"). From the available biographies, I have distinguished a few that deserve attention:

"I am looking for a companion for a joint weekend trip to the Tatra Mountains. The main goal is to climb Rysy."
Although it's a short bio, it conveys specific content. A woman viewing this profile will have an idea of what it would be like to hang out with this man.

“I love spending time in an interesting company, especially if I can make these people laugh. I even wanted to be a comedian once. [...] "
This part of the description is a great demonstration of the "show instead of speaking" principle. The man could write (thankfully he did not) that he is funny, but the content of his bio carries many more meanings.

“I love sport in all its forms, especially MTB, F1 and sailing. I used to represent a high school in a grid (191) 😉 "
Another self-description similar to the previous one, although it could carry more information. What's important, the generalized phrase "I love sport" has its extension, reference to personal life and prompts you to write a message. One would like to ask if the school he represented won.

“A bit minimalist, a bit crypto-vet. Krypto because I mask myself quite well and, if necessary, I can even do small talk. Although I prefer it when it is not necessary 😉 I play martial arts, after work I change my shirt to a kimono or a tracksuit. [...] "
“[…] He can make a cake and semolina with milk. And tighten the screw. And it will weld something. Lest it be too rosy, it can also spoil it 😉 But it cannot write the first messages. Absolutely. Neither do the other ones. [...] "
The next two self descriptions are a good example of how you can be authentic on Tinder and introduce yourself that way.

"I make the best toasts with mayonnaise 😉 Of course, this is not my only advantage"
The last example of a bio may not be suitable for all men, and it will not be liked by every user who views the profile. However, it does appear to be able to actually reflect the disposition of the account owner. It is not worth trying to be serious, romantic, etc., when you are not such a person. "

Finally, a small note, the biographies and their excerpts described here are only examples to illustrate how to stay positive, but also authentic on a dating website or app. It is not worth copying the self-provided descriptions. They can be treated as inspiration. What's more important, it's not that the examples I have selected are a universal recipe for endless likes, on the contrary - by describing ourselves as "some" person, let's get specific users interested. However, it is worth remembering that not everyone is attractive to us, fortunately!
